Friday 11th came and the agenda for the day was to visit NPR Music which hosts TINY DESK concerts, have our final meet up with the faculty and then do the third performance at the Kennedy Center Milleniumstage. Everyone in the group started to feel a little sad and somewhat excited about that it’s soon over, and then we have another performance in NYC at the Apollo tomorrow! These two weeks have just been incredible…
Morning “rush” in D.C. while on my way to Whole Foods to buy some brekkie.
In terms of all the pressure during the days and our performances, I was glad I got myself out of bed while listening to this song at the start of every day. (Kim Burrell, Thank You Jesus)
Jason Moran with Patrick Jarenwattananon,
Now a bunch of pictures will come with me and the faculty. I wish I could describe just how amazing they all are, both as musicians and mentors. But it’s kind of hard. Anyways, it’s been very different compared to Sweden and how you deal with ‘problems’ there. During Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead the critique has been extremely straight forward all the time, no time for talking almost, and the results are almost improved all the time even though some of the critique will take 10 years to develop…
Andre Hayward and Liselotte Östblom- a beautiful human being who loves music and loves jazz. He’s been a great encouragement for our group and really made us sound a lot better. A great trombone player and teacher.
Eric Harland and Liselotte Östblom. It’s just been incredible to see how Eric hears our music, in terms of groove and arrangement. Everytime he came and played a bit or listened, it just lifted every composition to a new level. That is true talent in action! You learn so much more when your mentor engages in everything and also plays with you. Thank you Eric!
J.D. Allen and Liselotte Östblom. He really listened to our music with a critical ear, and could refine the bits which was needed. Also when speaking about concept, our whole set, J.D. was in it for the experiential intensity which helped us to make great sets for each concert. We also had lots of laughs with J.D…. 🙂
John Hasselback III, Modibo Keita, Vincent Dupont, Raphael Pannier, Liselotte Östblom, Jordan Williams, Asher Kurtz, David Leon. My band- I will miss playing with them! After two weeks of 8 hours rehearsing each day, you get pretty attached to each other.
